Breast augmentation/ implant is a plastic surgery procedure in which the shape and size of a woman’s breast are enhanced, usually through the placement of an implant behind each breast. it is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures that has helped many women get desired breast shape and size.
Medically known as augmentation mammoplasty, breast augmentation is performed for various cosmetic reasons, whether to restore balance to asymmetrical breasts, to add volume to disproportionately small breasts or create a more voluptuous figure. Women who undergo this procedure are satisfied with the results.
Before the surgery
During initial consultation with the cosmetic surgeon, he or she would discuss several crucial factors with you. A thorough medical examination is performed to make sure that you are physically fit to undergo the procedure. Medicines you take are monitored. If you are taking blood thinners then you will be asked to avoid its intake. During this time only, the size of the implant would be finalised.
During the procedure
In simple words, the breast is cut open, excess skin and tissue is removed, implants placed and the skin is pulled and stitched back together. The cosmetic surgeon you choose make incisions according to the type of implant that has to be placed. Here is a quick glance into how the breast augmentation surgery is done.
- The surgery is done under general anaesthesia.
- There are three types of main incisions that can be made on the basis of your body’s anatomy. These are – periareolar incision, trans-axillary incision and inframammary incision. The first incision is made around areolas, the second one is made in the armpits and the final one underneath the breast.
- Then the surgeon places the implants carefully inside the breast pocket. The implant can be placed either behind the breast tissue or under the pectoral muscle.
- Finally, the plastic surgeon closes the incision and sutures it.
After the procedure
Right after the breast implant procedure, you will be kept under observation to make sure that there is neither excessive bleeding nor clotting. Breasts are wrapped in gauze and you have to wear a compression garment for support or elastic bandage to support your breasts. You might have to stay in hospital for a day or two. Make sure you adhere to the instructions given by the cosmetic surgeon to avoid any complication or risk. You will be asked not to indulge in any strenuous activity for a few months. You can resume work as suggested by the doctor.
